Forgive me for being naive here, but wouldn’t it be sensible and reasonable from a security perspective the map update thing is part and parcel of your option purchase term of rental or say purchased outright ???  The nav option with at the very least basic street map directions updates should be standard.  The bells & whistles of course cost you those paws you call atms and legs.

I don’t about you, but since when does the speedometer stop working after you get the keys to the car after the break in period and have to purchase an update to unlock the needle???
