Seems to me that towing the van into the middle of the desert would have been a smarter cooler looking maneouvre.  Baking the thing until shrunk wrapped and to weak to do anything.  Unless as you posit he really wanted to shoot himself… In which case no worries with the same results without green eggs & ham on your face !
