You failed to point out the ‘WHY’ ! WSJ Marketwatch – U.S. drivers waste billions paying for premium gas, AAA says

Your story while correct misses the point.  Higher OCTANE is a normal requirement when all types of combustion engines have HIGH COMPRESSION RATIOS in their cylinders to avoid PREMATURE IGNITION !

THE KNOCK KNOCK KNOCKS WHO’S THERE IS THE LACK OF FUEL THAT UNDER STANDARD TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE IS A CLEAR SIGNAL THAT HIGHER OCTANE IS NEEDED.

THE CRITICAL PING TEST IS WHETHER OR NOT YOUR FANCY NEW ENGINE IN YOUR VEHICLE CAN DETECT THE KNOCKING AND ADJUST FIRING ACCORDINGLY.  OTHERWISE… MAYBE THERE’S SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS GOING ON AND SHOULD HAVE IT CHECKED.

THAT’S WHY LISTENING TO THE ECHOES OF PINGS FROM KNOCKING IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN TALKING NON-STOP AND NOT LISTENING INSTEAD.  SO GOES FOR HUMANS TOO.

THE HIGH END VEHICLES… BUT ALSO THOSE WHO’S ENGINES HAVE BEEN CUSTOMIZED FOR PERFORMANCE REASONS.

SO… YES… THE EVERYDAY SMART CAR DOES NOT NEED HIGH OCTANE.

BUT THE FERRAI MASERATI LAMBOURGHNI PORSCHE et al… hummmm, I WOULD FOLLOW MANUFACTURERS RECOMMENDATIONS.

THEN AGAIN… NOTHING LIKE A GTO SHELBY MUSTANG ON THE LOOSE !

QUICK…. GET ME THE KEYS AND MAKE SURE IT’S JET FUEL IN THE TANK !
