CBC News – The National – Watch the Show.

Once the determination of the origin of the fire is concluded, the issue doesn’t simply boil down to just sprinklers and the number of evacuation minutes to get people out to safety in the event of an emergency.

It really boils down to lessons learned in battle fields and wars. The strategy being that once a soldier is injured, they require 1 on 1 help to get to safety and medical attention.

Now realistically, in retirement homes… clearly it’s not a battlefield. But there should be another measure of safety introduced in the form of a plan whereby nearby residents, first responders, EMS and firefighters have comprehensive knowledge of plans or measures to get people out to safety without themselves being put at risk. Additional standby help something like neighbourhood watch comes to mind.

The medical staff and caregivers can only carry 1 person at a time out to safety. To ask them to make multiple trips in and out of a burning building is unreasonable and stupid.

If a fire drill exercise notes X minutes in good conditions, obviously when all hell breaks loose, those numbers go out the windows just as fast as the building can go up in flames.

This is the REALITY CHECK !
