The current police chief definitely has a serious problem on his hands. But let’s not forget this important fact. First of all, he’s fairly new to the job – so time will tell if he’s able to turn things around in a positive way on issues of following Charter Rights and lawful enforcement of laws.
Second, it takes alot of time to train law enforcement officers so they understand what, how, why and when to proceed with their work.
That Ottawa Police has a problem is evident and will take time to admit publicly. It’ll take outside scrutiny, courts, officers and outside interventions to put a stop to illegal conduct and stop putting people at risk of false accusations and public safety if real offenders get off on technical aspects.
Third, since this is a systemic problem – the root of which may go back decades, I would squarely put the blame on the former OTTAWA POLICE CHIEF. Vernon Darryl “Vern” White !

Why, first off a plush appointment into the Senate should clue people in. Next, being of recent appointment as the former Police Chief, he should have known better with all the available information he had on hand in how to proceed with officer training. You don’t train an officer in one day and have them commit illegal acts the minute they put foot to ground and do patrols. It takes time to condone questionable conduct by turning a blind eye to methods deemed unacceptable under the Canadian Charter.
The stench from all the senate business has been wafting in the air far too long !
Fourth – I would group politicians – specifically the Mayor for also encouraging the behaviour of the Ottawa Police force and not putting a stop or at least being public in a manner that inspires leadership of moral conduct on the part of officers who truly believe in what they do. It’s no picnic to be an honest moral police officer, but finally get it that things ain’t exactly square and on the level in the way business is conducted.
Five – Of all the wrong places to be doing the wrong things, OTTAWA SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A MODEL OF INSPIRATION – it’s CANADA’S CAPITAL & a NATIONAL SYMBOL WITH THE RCMP on the front lawn !
