Bingo on the money.
References is a system at best used as an excuse to not hire someone based on some type and manner of discrimination.
Whether that is from a former or prospective employer.
References in my personal opinion are rarely worth their salt !
They are based and typically biased in some way.
Good or bad they are substantiated mostly on personal opinions and rarely on metrics(to high xpenses & costs to justify). Small businesses are most at risk in this category.
Bigger corporations with HR departments can and often have generally accepted industry trained people to keep track of metrics and social interactions at work. The question remains however if the specialists are a well rounded group or skewed in some way that could possibly have an impact on tbe metrics.
