We’ve got the evacuation plans in motion, safety angles covered, humanitarian, health & care aid in place, the mechanics of making sure that everything works ticky boo, logistics around making everything come together and plans for rebuilding efforts.
The only thing ever never ever spoken and left unspoken about is the financial impact of disasters.
From the perspective of everyday living and normal Dance of Life – the clock still ticks whether we’re alive or dead. Things still go on regardless. As such whether we’re in the thick of the mess, or part of the way impacted by disasters the clock ticks and bills still come in and stack up waiting to be paid.
It seems to me that for everyday people who toil and work and worry their whole lives taking care of the essentials is just another piece of the puzzle that needs addressing in terms of putting it front and center and on the table.
It would go a long way to put into motion on the parts of Governments and Financial Institutions ways in which affected people and businesses would not have to go pleading hands out and begging for help and mercy while they are in dire straits.
I believe more often then not, while still dealing with the disaster scenarios and once things have become more sustainable and manageable people/businesses are dealing with a pile of bills overdue, interest added and numerous discussions on the merits of the situations.
Financial institutions have the means to put in place in their business intelligence software a few added lines of code and buttons up everyone’s YIN/YANG to address these types of situations.
There is room for compassion and this would go a long way in helping many people. Of course, it’s not a perfect world, but it would be a start having Calgary be the epicenter of this type of change model.
I’ve always wondered about how this works, well it’s time to start talking about it cause this may not be the first nor the last such type of event that affects a major city of a million people and then some.
Last but not least – make it easy for people to get financial relief while dealing with this. Don’t put it in fine print on the last page of a 100 book set of an encyclopedia.
