With all due respect – that the situation with Ashley Smith ever got to the point that it did is the issue. This was handled from the get go ALL WRONG. Worst it escalated into what transpired as her ultimate act of defiance with the determination to end her life.

If the dreaded body cavity search and indignity of probing a VAGINA or ANAL CAVITY were truly the issue, the question begs as to ‘WHY’ should it have gone to such an extreme form of hiding something under the KNOWLEDGE AND CONSCIOUS CHOICE of knowing that searches would make others(institutional employees, doctors, nurses) all uncomfortable with the thought of being liable for an indignity to an incarcerated person’s rights.

If Ashley Smith was present enough of MIND to do such things, then can we not assume without her being present now to acknowledge it that she knew what she was doing?

There will be plenty of other debates on these issues of body cavity searches in the future – all with similar ramifications. I think it’s high time we revisit the way people are treated way before it gets to this point of them using all available methods to procure themselves of whatever it is they need by hiding things in body cavities.

Seems like there is little resistance and discussion in talking about incarcerated men in correctional facilities undergoing body cavity searches in their ANAL CAVITIES. I WOULD HAVE TO ASSUME it’s because both parties get pleasure from undergoing the search and therefore the conclusion is that it’s acceptable too.

So the question here is – ‘WHY’ is a VAGINA considered more SACRED or sacrosanct ??? Not that it makes it alright, but what is it in this particular case with Ashley Smith more than other females if at all.

Incarceration for just being a kid and in need of help in whatever form DOES NOT JUSTIFY going down the roads that it took with Ashley or anyone else. Time to rethink how we handle MENTAL ILLNESSES because there will be many more cases like her’s.
