Here’s my humble 5 cents worth with little expertise and knowledge of Korean Language – sorry but it’s been a while having been there done that helping inventing it.
However I would suggest people especially Koreans to research the original Hangul character sets to Chinese characters for the exact translation and meaning into English.
My take after a Google search on Kim translated into a Family Last Name which is what I would have expected given I’m not Korean.
However that said – the ‘CHI’ part translates as NRGY. Raddish especially the one specifically used, although there are many forms of Kimchi, this one a long white raddish, Lobak is the Chinese name for it, however it is different in shape and size. The one I am familiar with given my many years of Macrobiotic expertise is called Daikon, which is the one that I have seen used in Kimchi.
I’ll use Daikon to explain it’s fundamental properties. It is a hot pungent raddish similar in length to how a carrot grows – depth.
White long thick pungent raddish. It’s fundamental NRGY is that of ‘METAL’ within the 5 Elements food group. Without going into technical details – you can get that from a Macrobiotic counsellor, it’s effects work on both the Lungs & Large Intestines. It dislodges mucus in the Lungs effectively(Cystic Fibrosis) by helping to create ‘Heat’ and the resulting Entropy effect. Furthermore it thins out the blood by cleaning out toxins at a faster rate than normal. Although too much will cause anemia if not careful. Best part is this one here. It helps to get the Large Intestine in ship shape by melting Lipids and maybe meat proteins(haven’t tested lately to confirm) that are just hanging around and stuck in the Lumen. Effectively a good colon scruber and cleanser. Downside, too much will make you lose NRGY from the quick de-tox, especially if it’s very pungent and bitter(depends on the model as they say). So it’s an effective way to keep the Large Intestine in good health and may have practical applications for Colon Cancer – Yep docs have work on their plate to check out how that works. Of course not all people will respond the same way to Daikon because of their dates of birth and NRGY interactions with it.
Because of it’s color, shape and tastes I place it dead smack on the Virgo/Libra/Scorpio NRGY measurement scale. That translates into Rooster/Dog/Boar in Oriental Astrology. What that means in numbers is the number 7 for Virgo/Rooster and the number 6 for Libra/Dog & Scorpio/Boar pairs. Personally I consider more 6 Metal than a 7 Metal, but it really depends on it’s either pungent = 7 Metal or bitter = 6 Metal taste. A lot of heat and sun will cause the flavor to turn to bitter taste.
Pickles traditionally in all cultures were used as a replacement means for refrigeration. With pickles fermented to their right states, you would create necessary enzymes in food to help the body through winter months. Fermentation is associated with Spring NRGY of Wood especially Dragon NRGY.
While NOT exactly, NRGY here is represented by the red chili spice used as a further preservative at a time when refrigeration was not available. Now with commonplace refrigeration available in many places in South Korea, chili could be reduced. The combination of too sour & too fiery in modern Korean society places extreme stress on it’s society. It is better suited for the North Korean population who rely on more traditional methods because of lack of services. Both however will come head to head in a catastrophic war if it’s use is not better managed. It’ll make Germany’s East/West divide based on sauerkraut like like a Sunday afternoon picnic at the park. Mark my words people. Trouble ahead.
so for argument’s sake
Kim + NRGY + 6 Metal Dog/Boar + 4 Wood Dragon/Snake = NRGY of Wood & Metal which in the Oriental 5 Element model is on the diagonal.
In the magic square this NRGY is exactly the same 4 Wood goes through 5 Center Soil(Empty Space) to 6 Metal. And this year the NRGY is exactly dead 5 Soil Center from the Magic Square. BTW the Magic Square is the representation of 9 STAR Ki NRGY. Look it up. All schools especially Catholic ones introduce it to young students in early childhood education. I remember mine in school and filed the information into my brain cells – what can I say. I didn’t rediscover it till 1982 while attending Macrobiotic philosophy classes.
Well if there’s a year to get on board with NRGY, this is it in terms of food. Kimchi Radish Pickles will do wonders to move you about and change your NRGY in a subtle yet tangible effective way. Just remember to go easy on it – powerful stuff. Last but not least, choose the jars with the most green colored cabbage leaves. That means the process is just starting within that area and the sugar hasn’t been fully converted and tastes the sweetest. You get pungent sweet taste along with a zing to move any stuck NRGY within your body.
Watch out for too sour tasting Kimchi as it will tighten up your Livers and cause pain because it is cleaning out too quickly. The effect of too much sour also cause direct aggressive behaviour and violent outburst. Fair warning if you love sour and eat lots of it.
Eventually with your lungs less full of mucus you generate lots of Chi or Ki NRGY to supply you with infinite NRGY from the Universe. It’s one easy way to reach for the fountain of youth and get your medicine all at the same time. The Dance of Life & NRGY at work compliments of Koreans.
There are tons of different recipes out there for Kimchi. Research and try them all, they all have different effects on the human body, mind & spirit. Have fun. π
Thank them when you get the chance.
So what does it all mean? Magic medicine on your plate – as Michio said FOOD determines your Destiny. So Master NRGY = Master your own Destiny. Took me so long to figure that out, but I had to live out the experiences to make sure that it was the REAL DEAL, not some hocus pocus words in books.
Now I know without doubt.
