Why do employees become nasty?

“There has been much discussion lately of the scandal at Stafford Hospital in the West Midlands of England, where patients were mistreated and death rates were high.

Comments have focused on cost-cutting and managerial box-ticking, but few seem able to answer the most troubling question: What made some nurses at the hospital, people who surely entered the profession to do good, turn so nasty?”….

Sounds and seems almost better to stay out of the health care system or use at your own peril. Even mental institutions almost seem like a better option. Although let’s not get ahead of ourselves here – we have no data on the quality of care in those areas considering the privacy issues faced with disclosure.

But yet, is it so unexpected? The critical question in the fiscal re-balancing act has to acknowledge quality patient care while these transitions are going on. Otherwise we might as well ask patients to jump out the window for their own safety, sanity and dignities.
