Create welfare smart card that can only be used for food: Hudak

Some parts I agree with, others not – however the main point I would like to point out is this.
Compassion is always based on understanding the plight of someone something that needs help. That was the original intention of welfare.
And yes, perpetual welfare does no one a favor. In the long run it creates dependency just like all drugs do. If the crutch breaks or is kicked out as support then desperate times calls for desperate measures and the easy quick fix solution is often behavior that leads to crime thinking it’s the fastest way out of hell.
In my personal opinion having been through the system with OTTAWA COMMUNITY HOUSING, compassion should not be given with one hand and your feet kicked out from under you by corrupt policies. Basing rent on income and to add further insult to injury pinning $1.00(one dollar – a Loonie) increased parking rate as a reason to justify hugh rent increases is IMMORAL/UNETHICAL at the best of times. At the worst, it’s collusion with the malicious intent to cause irreparable harm to myself my children and to others. It causes antagonisms, conflict and combat war mentalities.
And in my personal humble opinion, it certainly doesn’t help when with pride I am arguing with an Ottawa Police officer who calls 380 Murray Street a ‘SHIT HOLE’ and I disagree with him, only to turn around a month later to agree with the officer after an email I send to Mayor Jim Watson is sent to ex-Chief Vince White complaining about the officer calling where I live a ‘SHIT HOLE’. Very embarrassing to turn tail and feel like me and both my children truly are part of the problem instead of working to improve our community. I later wanted to apologize to the officer for disagreeing with him, but never heard back. In the end, once I awoke, I had to agree sadly that OTTAWA COMMUNITY HOUSING at 380 Murray street is a ‘SHIT HOLE’. So where does that leave the other tenants of that ‘SHIT HOLE’. Stuck in it, neck high. No change in sight. Steve Hanson the district manager of that building downstairs re-inforced the officer’s message loud and clear by his behavior. There’s no doubt that building and the surrounding community is in extreme need of a major shake up. You can bet the loose change in your pockets that it’s coming.
So yes, attach debit food cards that can only be used a little bit each week for food purposes, so that someone doesn’t sell their food for drugs or other purposes. That helps people hopefully and puts less stress on food banks.
However, in keeping with the original intent of welfare, compassion in the form of many hands UP leads to break the cycle of dependence on it. With that in mind, if a person is in need, help with rent, food, medicine as basics. Once they are able to work and do it steadily for whatever arbitrary time set by the rules, the income earned should be proof enough of their abilties to sustain themselves without welfare. The supplemental income SHOULD NOT BE DEDUCTED unless there is an extremely good reason to do so. The supplemental income should demonstrate the will of working towards independence from the system. It should not be used as a CASH COW as my father often suggested I use my ex-wife as. The supplemental income should demonstrate an improvement in the quality of Life for individuals.
That is the task that welfare has failed to measure. It measures numbers and quantities but not quality. Time to change that areound. Both go hand in hand and helps society as a whole. In time the people who have successfully weaned themselves with pride from a system of dependency will want to return the favor through an abundance mentality of paying it forward.
Punitive derisive measures of welfare are from the bad old days of baby boomers having it all, thinking that all people who didn’t, couldn’t, wouldn’t want to work were lazy.
Today, we have ample proof that is not the case – work at the best of times for these people is minimum wage and part time when it can be found. Costs of living high, rent un-affordable and transportation expensive because of high NRGY costs.
Time to change the governments mentality on the subject of welfare and naming it workfare only makes it worst.
Community-Fare has an inclusive positive message. We are all in this together. Proof is in the way communities have become more inclusive and diversified by incomes and social status integration.
Stop the Spin Cycles and create Spiral Cycles of strong individuals who will in turn create strong communities, cities, state/provinces and nations.
Guaranteed that less in the pockets of recipients will make them turn to crime. That will stretch police costs, mental health costs, delivery costs, incarceration costs, rehabilitation costs and administrative costs. Policing oversight stress from many small crimes to larger more dangerous community crimes. Increased budget deficits and ballooning interest costs. Who’s out to win elections, not me !
Reducing costs in one small minor area increases major costs in all other areas.
Reducing is short sighted. Rethink that strategy. It’s an endless Death Spin Cycle. If you think guns in the United States aren’t a problem, then try living there for a while and having a near death experience. Once you’re floating above your nearly lifeless body, things will click – but might be too late.
Conscious Choices…. it has the potential to make all the difference in the world.
