National Post online – Jonathan Kay: To understand how we got to Attawapiskat, go back to the 1905 James Bay Treaty

Excellent points.

Now regardless of all the finger pointing either way – it’s time to start settling this one way or another. The problems, debates, discussions and worst than 3rd world living conditions here in Canada would make anything from the 2nd world war look like a Sunday afternoon picnic. And that War ended decisively and definitely in 1945 after about 6 years of hell.

How long does this need to go on? High time that both the government and First Nations get their act together and start working with milestones, targets and solutions to these long standing problems. Make no mistake – this is not a 1 day fix. What’s taken hundreds of years to decimate in terms of cultures and values and replace it with artificial trappings of western civilization is not going to be easy. You have to rid the corrupt nature of people who would not think twice of harming their own people by following western ideas of greed and avarice. Hey it’s not their fault – that was how they were educated and mentored. A gun in hand, a dance around a fire all while looking at what white men had and were doing while getting away with murder. Let’s not talk anything about Residential schooling please. What else could you expect. It’s no different than any other culture and people on the planet that lives in strife while looking for a way out of hell. Whatever it takes it takes!

So with all of that said, people on 1 side really want to sit down now and resolve the issues and problems. It’s high time we did the same, gave them what they needed to correct their problems and make sure they stayed on track to achieve it. It’s no sense throwing money at problems only to have them perpetually come back to haunt politicians when that clearly doesn’t work. Whatever First Nations are asking within reason – let a few manage their destinies and see where that leads. In other cases, let the governments build the infrastructures, housing, supermarkets, recreation centers, schools, water, heat and whatever then hand the keys and measure, watch and make sure that things stay on track until such time that it becomes clear that moral conduct and ethical responsibilities on self governance has taken firm root.

Hey if everyone has better suggestions, now’s the time. But do it and stop talking. This thing has got to come to some kind of conclusion one way or the other. Time to move on and change to improve the national landscape and especially that of the North if we ever want to develop it’s resources jointly and profit from it.

Demonstrations, Hunger Strikes and talking forever is cheap. Put it together NOW and DO !
