Very good business sense when companies such as Shopify give employees the leeway and resources to play to work. Spoiling is a good thing, because the unspoken consensus is that they are valued – which is a win-win.
Yet, we all know by the tech slaughter of the tech bubble that many a good/great talent was lost and washed away in Ottawa.
Here’s my suggestion to make Shopify and I believe other companies one being Google that follows a similar path in helping employees excel above and beyond the typical duty cycles of employment.
Typically each industry has “retention & turnover” numbers within it’s HR departments and the trick is to keep employees as long as possible once the investment has been made and is paying off. So what’s the trick ? Simple – help them answer the big questions in their lives – the why, who and what they want. In other words spiritual components. Why invest in something so intangible when we can simply burn ’em, chuck ’em and be ride of them? Simple – because they will embody and become the prophets of the sweet smell of total success of a company. Today’s young generation become easily distracted and looking for the next big thing. And when the rubber hits down the road, tech companies will be recruiting and be left burnt themselves. As these younger generations grow within stable environments and are assisted in their quests for meaning, they’ll want to stay and give 110% passionate output to make sure that companies continue to excel. The longer the quest, the longer the retention power of the work with that company.
So while a little excess is good, too much leads to dysfunction – in all rancges of human experience. The best value for the ROI is to make sure that solid anchors are built into positions for people who really Matter. First Things First – What Matters Most by keeping the End in Mind. And that is a long term employee that buys, lives and breathes a company 31 days a month, 24/7/365 for decades. It’s just good common business sense and extremely profitable. Besides the side effect is hard to beat – a company becomes the envy of all and hard to beat in the marketplace.
At least Scrooge learnt his lessons because of Ghosts.
Now let’s see modern companies step up to the plate and take their place in the Sun.
