Mr. Jackson – with all due respect you are right – I love movies such as one you have starred – Die Hard with Bruce Willis. Then there’s Terminator movies, Alien movies, etc….
What I have said I will stand by – guns, movies, video games, music, drugs are all parts of the TOTAL SUM of what turns on a switch in a killer’s mind and makes them snap – especially in cases of mass murders.
Babies aren’t born evil or efficient killing machines from the get go. Without all the SUM of all the InterSEXions – parts, pieces and dots, these senseless waves of killings, bombings, terrorism and torture in Real Life – the painted picture of a puzzle remain unfinished – unrealized. Falling short of it’s intended goal of striking fear, hate and violence – thirst for power and recognition today called infamy. A way to even things out. While 1% of the population may have all the money, the other 99% will use guns, bombs whatever – it’s a no brainer.
If you go further and add the very necessary ingredients from birth due to genetic defects from legal/illegal drugs and add separated parents, being abandoned, discrimination, economic hardships, violence, video games, music and easy access to weapons that make it easy to kill – then voila – Police and Authorities are but helpless but to watch and only respond once a horrific crime is committed. Many times too late and not of their fault. They can only do so much and the responsibilities for safety and security resides within each one of us to take care of those around us.
The United States is the focal point only because it enjoys democracy and freedoms unlike any other nation on earth. There’s a huge price to be paid for that and it’s called responsibility. Knowing the difference between right/wrong – ethical/moral conduct. Every politician in Washington and throughout the country and even Canada knows and understands this concept to the core. The voice of reason becomes muted because of lobbying, political games, money and finally votes into office.
I dare say to any politician to say that assault weapons are okay on the streets of America. If you want to commit political suicide – the moment has never been better. Ah…. but wait a few weeks, months and it’ll be like a long forgotten nightmare and the blame for a young boy having lost his mind will suddenly be shifted elsewhere by the current flavor of NEWS.
And that is the problem – we’re limited in the amount of time we are able to give our children the right set of tools to know those differences of putting power in their hands at such a young age. Hence all the other elements of society come together to form the mentors of young vulnerable minds already at a disadvantage by so many factors. Warped speed bootcamps to adulthood.
There was a time – wisely enough when adulthood used to be 21 years of age. And even then apprenticeships, journeymen and Masters took years of experience to learn how to practice their trades with skill and inefficiency and have a good ROI for society.
Today it’s called 18 years of age and I would go so far as to say we are asking young children to learn about sexual maturity at incredibly insane speeds.
It’s not guns that kill people – it’s people that kill people – we all get that, no argument there. Yet assault weapons with capabilities to inflict carnage on a vast scales have no place within the scope of modern societies and cities especially. These are weapons of war, and even then they are being replaced by DRONES, far more efficient without all the carnage – the Pentagon has seen the light. So why is society still debating these issues. If the military has this figured out, then what’s taking so long to turn things around – are we waiting for a madman, madboy, madwoman, madgirl or madbaby to have a dirty bomb go off in some city before we say ah… okay it’s time we do this differently?
Whether it’s Canada or America, Mexico or anywhere else – what will it take to turn things around. Worst. This is just but a sample, a taste of things to come. You haven’t seen anything yet – if things don’t turn around.
And no, I don’t mean become a TOTAL BIG BROTHER SOCIETY, or Dungeons full of tortured prisoners being asked to confess. It’ll take time, patience and the strong and courage to do hard choices.
Let’s look at this from another perspective – CHANGE the way movies are rated for instance. The current system in my opinion isn’t working – but that’s me and I’m not an expert in rating movies. Each industry has an obligation to society to put it’s best foot forward and make sure that it doesn’t become an accomplice aiding and abetting heinous crime.
I could blame psychologists for instance – they have all this Magic Voodoo medicine of the mind all wrong. While the fireworks take place in the mind of deranged people, the root of the problem lies in the integrity of the body. If it’s falling apart – how can the mind find a stable and peaceful home for it’s spirit in troubling times. Take another pill and call me in the morning. Eventually – what a whole bottle of pills to fix the problem and then you have attempts at suicide by medicine.
The list goes on… time to have a concerted conversation not just about LEGAL ASSAULT WEAPONS, but about what makes great societies tick when all hell starts to break loose. It’s gonna be a long conversation.
Finally – how much more proof do we need before it becomes obvious that we can’t run away from these problems. They’ll come at ever increasing speed and horror. How many more children are you willing to speak up for that has had their Life extinguished.
Continue making movies with lots of possibilities – but promote them in the spirit of who they are meant to be for. Responsible adults who understand the differences between doing the right thing and not. In which case the consequences are in place through laws to deal with them.
I love your passion Mr. Jackson. Please use it to help Hollywood come up with a better model, don’t go down a path of being used for some other purpose. Master your Destiny.
