Well it’s not that I’m embarrassed about our military, but don’t sign me up Scotty any time soon.
Let’s backtrack a bit shall we. Military might serves it’s own purpose in time place depending on the country. Originally the intent of armies was to ensure the safety of the ruling classes and their King’s and Queens. Strong armies were the victors for all intents and purposes the good, bad and ugly of the culmination of wars that resulted in the assimilation of it’s spoils, territories and enemies. By using war – whether morally justifiable or not, kingdoms grew in size, complexity and needed law & order to maintain peace. It is reasonable to assume that for most commoners, war was not the preferred option, but sometimes necessary to ensure peace. Whatever tactics and strategies used, the victor took it all and did as they wish. That was the “good” old days – relatively speaking about a simpler age. Costs were factored in human lives lost, costs to rebuild and wage a battle or entire war and what could be gained from it all
Fast forward today – much more complex scenarios, but with bigger consequences because of technological advancements that has changed the nature of the game. No longer are countless armies of men and women required to wage front-line battles to win. From distances, airplanes, rockets, missiles of all types including nuclear, cruise missiles, drones at the push of the button can change everything in the blink of an eye. Sit down, have a seat, sip some tea, put on your virtual reality goggles, put on your iPod ear buds and gangs away – have fun.
What’s lost in all this surgical precision that I deride is this – wars are so clean, so precise, so remote that we are going from the human element of fighting ugly wars that no one wants to begin with, to fighting them for the hell of it cause it’s so easy to turn our heads around when a drone hits it’s target maybe by mistake. For sure, we want to kill the bad guy. No doubt about it, it’s not an argument on anyone’s agenda to comtemplate otherwise.
However the sliding scale of this whole concept of fighting wars will again lead us to what…. where are we headed with this cold detached way of killing ourselves remotely. Someone from Iran sends some dummy mule to deliver a nuke in our backyard and push a remote TV button in Iran and poof – up in smoke goes New York?!!
How many more ways have we got to kill ourselves stupid??? Next well be doing it to Citizens on Mars once we colonize it and things don’t turn out exactly the way things we’re suppose to – oops, there goes Colony 5 in so and so district. Millions of miles away. No morale questioning. Purely business decision – sorry no hard feelings.
In this new era, I think in Canada and every country should gauge itself accordingly, we need a healthy Military. A fraction of a strong military that cannot stand up and do it’s job properly in at least times of peace, doesn’t need to exist. It’s money ill spent. Time to bring Canada’s military to the 21st century and give it the tools it needs to do it’s job – well and with integrity.
Now all the diplomats and polictians have to do is exercise their conscience on moral and ethical matters. At what cost is a war justifiable and as a peaceful country is it not better to have a strong military to first make sure they are available first and foremost to help out Canadians, but to lend a helping hand in around the globe for peacekeeping efforts until such time that 2 opposing sides can come up with some sort of agreement to resolve their disputes as peacefully as possible.
In the 21st century, unless all hell breaks loose, there is NO LONGER a need for militaries around the world to pursue Armageddon types of scenarios. We have surgical instruments for that and they sound just as terrifying as they are deadly. Even if it’s still at the push of a button. All we have to do now, is screw on our heads right so we don’t lose it for the wrong reasons and call it an oops moment or the devil made me do it.
So can we make wiser choices or do we repeat ad-infinitum the same mistakes over and over again until we wipe ourselves off global maps.
I would just love to have an Alien’s point of view on what they’re thinking on this issue – an outsider’s perspective. Hey maybe that’s it – arm youselves to the teeth against a Mars Attack and see if that works. In my opinion we’re still outmatched, outgunned and outwitted. We simply don’t have our acts together globally.
So what’s gonna take???? Which way is it gonna be??? Back to cavemen days with clubs once we’re done pushing buttons, or using smarter ways to deal with the future???
This is no trick question – choose wisely, but the clock is ticking….. we can’t sustain billion dollar military budgets forever and ever…. One day those bills are gonna have to be paid. One way or the other.
