We can all blame geography in Canada, every single city is in the same boat. Canada is a big ass country and if the environment is a priority, then cost takes a backseat to geography. Imagine if every city in the world used that argument – the world is bound to go to smog/pollution hell.
Nope, if cost is a bigger priority, then slice up Ottawa to it’s pre-amalgamation days and let smaller communities decide for themselves what they would like to pay for transit costs.
At some point someone with balls needs to decide how to manage things with a bigger perspective. If we can cancel old LRT contracts and pay out millions in penalties, we can build LRT/transitways that reflects our values.
Time to decide and make it happen.
Take your cue from Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi – pay now in today’s dollars or make today’s kids pay tomorrow with money you won’t want to invest into health care services for senior. It’ll just be cheaper to let you croak on a public sidewalk.
