Other than the primary obvious savings of money, I would argue for the government to state it’s case on this issue.
Religion is a fundamental basic right of all Canadians and the most important in my own humble opinion. It supersedes all others, first and foremost in our Constitution.
So my arguement is this. All Canadians and persons incarcerated under Canadian Laws in a democratic country under International Human Rights are allowed to exercise the choice of religious freedom and to practice it. Whether free within society or while incarcerated. The means if chaplains have been available in the past, then this is a grandfathered right. Changing now, okay – add more, but don’t eliminate. Reason is simple, in the end the only reason people want to live is that they believe in a higher order and power than themselves. It is the simple view that if honest and sincere contrition is demonstrated, then their souls/spirits will have a chance at eternal Life.
Otherwise with no possibility of redemption down the line, rehabilitation within themselves and society is not worth the effort. Might as well put the death penalty back on the books and shoot them right away to eliminate the deficit once and for all.
