Ottawa Citizen online – Chianello: Inspection reports seem to have fallen into a sinkhole

Congrats Ottawa Citizen ! This is the first time that I have seen in print critical thinking and questions being asked in reasonable way for the public good.

If a City such as Ottawa can hope to sweep facts under the rug as quickly as possible and leave us all with stories of fiction once our attention spans are focused elsewhere, then no purpose is served in spending money on reports that get buried into sinkholes and disappear from view and scrutiny.

Anything public is on the table. 90 days is long I agree in this case, because of the possibility of other similar incidents happening without warning.

Imagine for a moment waiting 90 days for a report on the MacDondald Cartier, Alexandria, Chaudiere Bridge possible structural failures. I know they’re interprovincial responsibilites. Yet the public would be up in arms and rightly worried about being killed. Ditto for all roads with similar pipe issues.

90 days maybe reasonable in some cases where common sense and a valid explanation offered to the public. However, where public safety is concerned, step on it Ottawa. Especially in the light of other inspection reports coming out much faster.

Thank you Ottawa Citizen for asking important questions and not backing down when the explanations don’t hold ground and don’t serve anyone. Keep up the good work.
