CNN online – Smartphones let work win out

True enough. However consider the alternatives.

Businesses in the 80’s to about mid 90’s just before the advent of Windows 95 and compact cellphones, were reliant on pagers as a way and means of getting in touch with it’s employees.

Pagers where just as much of a nuisance if not more than smartphones in this case. You were paged and expected to return the call to the number or voicemail left in your box. Often though, with no idea of what to expect, you were left scrambling in search of whatever emergency was required of you.

Now at least there’s some sort of semblance if the company sending you the text message, email or whatever requires your immediate attention. Armed with a better idea of what’s expected, sharp employees have at least a good and meaningful ability to respond quickly and with pertinent information requested. At the very least, they can search the company’s network by logging on to it’s VPN or whatever website account logon and do their homework prior or subsequent to a request.

So it’s good for business and employees. True your still if not more than ever connected 24/7/365. That hasn’t changed. But the smart money is to be pro-active and anticipate all possibilities. For the experienced warrior, any surprises can still take you off guard, yet they’re a measure of your passion to know your stuff and dish out a meal that will still amaze those they work with or for.

Try doing that with a pager from yesteryear and you’ll be hard pressed to find any veterans still around to talk about those ghost stories and their victories in the face of competition.

Move on and find some peace with the technology while turning it’s negatives into for profit adventures and innovations that stand you and your company apart from the rest.
