Ottawa’s LRT plans should encompass help from the NAC for a revamp of Sparks Street

It’s no secret Ottawa’s Spark street is in my strong opinion nowhere as good as it should be given it is steps away from Parliament Hill.

Ottawa should work with the NAC and come up with a unified plan for both while they are at it. The only real thing I would have to say about Spark Street revamp is to make it so attractive rent wise for businesses especially unique ones that it would attract crowds all day long as well as night time.

While the NAC is and should be a responsible landlord rent wise, have sky high rents that makes it tough for small business owners to make ends me isn’t my idea of growing Canada’s economy and putting a bright spot on the Map of Ottawa. There would be 3 interesting areas for tourists to visit – The Byward Market(which by the way could use some sprucing up), Elgin Street and a revamped core around Sparks and Queen. Rideau Street could also use some cleaning up during the LRT construction phase.

All I’m saying is that if Greber had a plan for a beautiful greenbelt all around the Capital area, we should also now be looking at doing something for the core. Calgary has great models of design, but I’m sure other cities could also be used for inspiration.

It’s time that the younger generation know where to go to have fun, business knows where to talk biz, and the general population knows about Ottawa’s heritage and history through the Byward Market. Farmers and local business owners could play a significant role here.

That would leave only someone to come up with an interesting idea for the winter time activities around the Rideau Canal.
