Canada Post is in fact in the mistaken position of regarding Postal Codes as proprietary. In fact it is not. Canada Post being a governmental organization given a charter to serve the Canadian Public is bound to use the most efficient way to conduct it’s business. That it has used the Postal Code system based on the British Postal Service use and made it widely available for use by both corporate and personal business use is common sense in helping it’s own sense of purpose and intention. GeoCode should not be paralyzed into submission of abandoning its use of it through litigation. It’s almost akin to having a reputable and well known burger franchise invent a hamburger and then preventing everyone from using the term hamburger or even comtemplating the notion of making one to begin with. Postal Codes are not propietary, they are simply a systematic way of putting information neatly together. Postal Codes refers to a geographical location and even Google encourages use of it’s own online mapping software to make money. Who you gonna sue now Canad Post – Google??? Get with it Canada Post and be creative, not destructive. Make money if you will but let small and big companies be the root of your survival and not your enemy. In my opinion, Canada Post would not know what to do with GeoCoding even if it were hit head on with the concept. Inept Companies should be included in Darwinian Awards. That includes any government organization that has outlived it’s useful mandates and charters. Change or Die. Simple adage to live by. If you choose wisely, creative change will transform you into wonderful butterflies….. 🙂 And if you think this is an attack on a dinosaur, well it is. My roots include my grandfather who use to be a postal employee. He’s gone now, Canada Post isn’t, but by all measures continue at this pace and you’ll be 6′ feet under the ground in no time flat. A finicky public that can no longer deal with the pace of change within it will be your demise.
